Disadvantages of being a small group

There are several disadvantages of being a small household, which are largely the converse of the benefits from large household size. First, there are a multitude of tasks to be done to grow enough food; maintain the farm’s equipment; water the herd of livestock; ensure the cooking, water collection, and care of household members; and have confidence in the longer-term survival and prosperity of the group. There are clear economies of scale in moving from a nuclear family to one involving several adult men, their wives, and families, which means that one or several can go on migration to earn cash, while an adult man stays behind to water livestock, repair the compound, and prepare the field for the forthcoming farming season. Hence, diversification of incomes and activities is much more possible in large households, which is explored in more detail in Chapters 6 and 7. Equally, given the uncertainty around success in producing and rearing children, having several married couples in the household producing children, which represent descendants for the household as a whole, offers some insurance against the failure of any single couple to produce enough descendants.
